We are hiring a project coordinator!

Start date: September-October 2025.

Location: Home/remote working; based in Sicily, with frequent local travel required to attend meetings, events and project activities.

Employment type: Consultancy contract (3 days per week); flexible working standard. Six-month contract with possibility of extension.

Salary: €14.400 – €21.000 per annum subject to level of skills and experience.

Line Manager: Sicily Environment Fund (SEF) Executive Director. Liaising regularly with SEF Team (PR & Communication Manager, SEF Project Manager), grantees and project partners.

The Sicily Environment Fund (SEF) is a not-for-profit foundation established in 2022 and registered in Italy supporting the most innovative and impactful projects that protect and restore nature in Sicily. We believe in tangible local actions to unlock solutions to shared global challenges, and that this is best achieved by empowering communities to protect their own local environment through a ‘bottom-up’ approach.

We are a branch of the Conservation Collective, a global network of local environmental charities that leverage funding, expertise, and experts to enable grassroots projects to amplify their environmental impact.

SEF delivers tangible, innovative initiatives and solutions by funding and implementing a diverse range of local projects such as wildfire prevention and citizen observatories, agroecology for ecosystem restoration, rewilding, captive breeding of endemic species, coral restoration, fishing gears circular economy and ghost nets clean-ups, community garden and composting, plastic free initiatives and more! As we grow, we are recruiting a Project Coordinator to help scale up our impact. We are seeking a self-motivated, organised individual with a passion for nature and community engagement. The person needs to be able to work well in a small, dynamic team; primarily remotely, with some travel within Sicily. There is potential for the role to grow as the projects expand.

Main objectives of the role:

  • Oversight of all aspects of the grant-making lifecycle.
  • Co-create, implement, and take part in project activities, in close collaboration with project partners.
  • Proactively identify new, impactful projects we can explore supporting.

Key activities will include working closely with SEF Team, and assisting with:

  • All aspects of the grant-making process (project pipeline, idea exploration, grant application, review process, monitoring, reporting & communicating impact).
  • Collaborating with stakeholders like local communities, businesses, and government agencies to promote conservation efforts.
  • Applying for funding and grants to support projects.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have excellent organisational, writing, and creative skills, with attention to detail.
  • Be self-motivated and able to work well remotely in a small, dynamic team.
  • Have strong interpersonal and networking skills, be culturally competent, and sensitive to the needs and perspectives of diverse communities.
  • Be proactive and efficiently prioritise agreed action to meet deadlines.
  • Be comfortable representing SEF at meetings and events.
  • Be comfortable with using (or learning to use) MS Office suite, Canva, WordPress, Mailchimp, Salesforce, and social media.
  • Prior experience in the non-profit / civil society sector will be considered an advantage.

Requirements:

  • Have knowledge and qualifications in Environmental Sciences, Conservation and related fields.
  • Previous experience in conservation and community engagement is preferred.
  • Have experience of the grant making process – either as a recipient or grant giver.
  • Be fluent in English and Italian both in writing and verbal communication.
  • Based in Sicily and willing to travel.
